Abstract

Two successful teacher training programs which could serve as models for other communities, community agencies, and universities have been developed by the College of Jewish Studies of Greater Washington (CJS) in conjunction with the American University (1980-89) and the George Washington University (1989- ). Both designs involved a high level of collaboration between these local universities and the CJS which is the teacher training arm of the Board of Jewish Education of Greater Washington (BJE). Both models provided the students with the human resources of a major university and the resources of the CJS and the local Jewish community. The later design (CJS & GWU) also involved family educator training, research and communal planning for the Greater Washington, DC Jewish Community.

While these models were targeted for Jewish teachers in day and supplementary school programs, they have implications for other religious and secular groups. This could include independent schools, both religious and secular, armed services personnel, museum educators, Teachers of English as a Second Language, and any group with instructional responsibilities that is traditionally under-represented in graduate level training. The collaboration and subsequent contractual relationship between GWU and CJS has allowed for substantially reduced cost for participants who develop additional knowledge and skills in the both Judaic Studies and the pedagogy of teaching. In addition to reaching a traditionally under-represented student population the graduate programs represent a service commitment of a university to the local community and it?s service agencies.
