Having studied a number of languages (French, Japanese, German, Classical Chinese), I have developed a sustained interested in language pedagogy; I hold a SPEAC certificate for Chinese pedagogy from Ohio State University. At Penn State, I taught Asian literature, Chinese language and culture, oversaw the teaching of Chinese lecturers and graduate instructors, supervised the internship program, and coordinatd the intensive summer Chinese program. I also administered proficiency certification exams in Chinese.

At George Washinton University, I teach traditional and modern Chinese literature, classical Chinese, and film and drama, and serve as the study abroad liaison. I also work with students in directed readings courses that explore special topics ranging from the martial arts novel to women's studies.

Pedagogy Training

2008   Professional development workshops conducted by the Center of Advanced Language Proficiency Education and Research (CALPER) at Penn State

2003   Chinese Language Pedagogy Training, SPEAC, Ohio State University

2002    American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), Modified Oral Proficiency Interview Tester Training

Studying another culture leads to the re-discovery of one's own. I believe that learning a language and culture resembles the process of putting on a live performance. In my classes the priority is given to student participation.
