John Gower (played by Edric Connor, center) tells a tale to an avid audience of sailors in a 1958 production of Shakespeare's "Pericles, Prince of Tyre" (dir. Tony Richardson, Royal Shakespeare Company, Shakespeare Memorial Theatre).

In Scene 5 of this play (pictured here), "John Gower, the Presenter" narrates an exciting tale of romance and incest derived from the story of Apollonius of Tyre in "Confessio Amantis," Book VIII.
