Second Nun

In 1377, Elizabeth Chaucer entered the Priory of St. Helen to become a nun. Above is an image of the second nun from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (from the Ellesmere manuscript, housed in the Huntington Library of San Marino, California).

Barking Abbey

In 1381, Elizabeth became a nun at Barking Abbey in London. This is a twentieth century artist's reconstruction of what Barking Abbey looked like in the late medieval period.
