Plague-infected monks

In 1348, the Black Death (an outbreak of the bubonic plague) reached England. This illustration from a fourteenth-century manuscript shows some monks who have been afflicted with the sickness (one symptom of the disease was pockmarks or scars on the skin).

Death Scene

In this illustration from a fifteenth century Book of Hours (a leaf from the Office of the Dead), Death comes for a man who lies ill in bed.
