Jodi, I believe that by now you have received a very complete and eloquently written letter from Glenn outlining his and his teams qualifications and needs.  I hope that the Synod and Embangweni will be kind enough to accept their generous offer of time, skills, and supplies.  Glenn has informed me that he is firming up his final dates and then is going to place an order with Yael.  If these dates and offer of services are acceptable I will create a letter similar to mine and John and Amy's for Yael and send it to you for signatures and if you could fax back to me I will forward to Yael.

I have told Glenn that I continue to feel that only two learners should be at Embangweni at any one time.  As you know, I will see that John and Amy are taken care of and Glenn will be present to continue with Amy and the third student he is bringing, Kevin Bergman.  I do not wish to be responsible for the supervision of the two Peds residents but since it appears that they are truly committed to coming to Malawi could you discuss with Frank and Maono and see if their might be a way to place them at another of the CCAP hospitals?  I am sure that Eckwendini would be a good setting as well as Mulanji.  Also, last year while we were working on the MTCT‑Plus grant, you introduced me to a Pediatrician who I believe was at the new District hospital in Mzuzu. Would he be a person who could care for and supervise two pediatric residents?

Also, as you know, one of Glenn's protégés Adam Kushner is working with Dr. Muyco at Lilongwe Central, I'm sure Frank knows Dr Muyco and maybe could contact him or this Adam Kushner or whomever else he might think is appropriate and see if there would be some opportunities for the residents to stay in Lilongwe and work on the pediatric wards there.  I know that two Irish medical students worked in Lilongwe last year in a similar situation.  Again, we have no obligations to these two but the opportunity to support the humanitarian efforts of others should not go unheeded if possible.  It is through these experiences, if they are good ones, that we will get our next generation of mission doctors who are willing to give of their time and resources to serve in places like Malawi.

I think that all of the other people that Glenn mentions are "maybe"s that he will discuss further with you once he arrives.  I know that he would very much like to create a long term relationship with CCAP and that is why Harolyn is accompanying him.  I would endorse the concept and, as time allows, I will provide all of the help I can to this cause.

I Cc:ed you in on that e‑mail to Matt Boxall, could you see that Maono, Jeffery and Alex see it. I will be interested in everyone's thoughts on the idea of collaboration with UNC and the Lighthouse Project.  It may actually be our best way of getting long term recognition and funding.  Most grantors like to send money to "known" entities and Embangweni is truly a small dot on the big screen with no track record and I am not sure that CCAP carries any more weight.  As for transportation, would it be possible to make some vehicle available to me for the two weeks I am here and I pay for all of the fuel and maybe a flat maintenance fee, the per km rate they charge at the hospital is to high.  I think the grant should cover this expense.

Again and again, thanks for all of your help.  I am so sorry to hear about the death of Rev. Lungu, he was such a special person, Betty was especially fond of him and will be very saddened.

George
