DECLINED INVITATION TO RETURN TO THE SAME NEPAL THAT EVERYONE ELSE IS TRYING DESPERATELY TO LEAVE, TO LEAD THE CANCELED TREK

TO DESERTED LUKLA

Even Gyalein is bailed out, desparately sending me notes to guarantee his own and now his wife's passage out of Nepal and assurance of putting them up indefintiely since he says the Maoists have closed the Lukla clinic and threaten to kill him if ever he attempts to come back to re‑open it.  So, what would we be doing there?  The patients cannot move around because of the curfew.

The dates Sep. 16 to Oct 6 are already filling in with other items as well, and would bump oinot the Sikkim trip.

Rarely would I cancel a trip because of instability in the area (after all, I just came from a Mindanao with US travel advisory restricting anyone going there, and moving about with a full platoon of Philippine Regular Army as a guard.)  But, I saw the restricted numbers of patients we saw last year in Lukla (half were the soldiers garrisoned in the town to protect us) and had heard that things have got a lot worse since then, so I think it would be a waste.

I have received 6 applications for Lukla and two from Australia are in the

mail.  After cancelling the trip. There was no way to pull the messages

back or to follow it up with a cancellation note. Would you like to still

do it.
