I have three recent books on economic development and ending global poverty:

Ending Global Poverty
Economic Development 10th Edition
NGOs and the Millenium Development Goals
Ending Global Poverty: A Guide to What Works was first published in 2005; the paperback edition with an Author's Afterword will bepublished in 2008. Find Ending Global Poverty online
Economic Development (10th Edition), co-authored with Michael Todaro, a major update with the latest data and thinking in the field, was published in March 2008. Find Economic Development online.
NGOs and the Millennium Development Goals: Citizen Action to Reduce Poverty, co-edited with Jennifer Brinkerhoff and Hildy Teegen, was published in summer 2007. Find NGOs and the MDGs online.

Comments on these books are always welcome.

My office is located at Monroe Hall 306 (2115 G St. NW), George Washington University, Washington, D.C. 20052; my email is ssmith at gwu dot edu.

The focus of much of my current research is on poverty and programs to address it in low income countries. I also continue to conduct research on other aspects of economic development, and on the economics of participation.

My teaching centers on economic development with a focus on poverty. For example:

This spring 2008, I am teaching the first course of the Ph.D. sequence in development economics, Econ 351.

In Fall 2007, I taught Econ 250, Survey of Economic Development, a course for masters students in international development and international affairs.

In Fall 2006, I taught a special seminar on the Economics of Poverty Alleviation.

In Spring 2006, I taught a special Writing in the Discipline (WID) section of Economic Development (Econ 151W).

I serve as director of the Research Program in Poverty, Development, and Globalization at the Economics Department.

I am a member of the Institute of International Economic Policy.

I serve as co-Principal Investigator, along with Prof. Jim Williams, of GW's partnership with BRAC University (in Bangladesh), which was initiated in 2004. BRAC has been one of the most innovative NGOs, and one that has stressed complementarity of poverty programs across sectors.

I am an associate editor of the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization.

I organized and served as first director of GW's International Development Studies Program.
