For most foreign languages the exercise above looks either very old (ca. 1964) or very foreign. Grammar drill was supposed to have died in the late 1970s. So why would Russian teachers rely on a technique based on Skinnerian principles which preceded communism into the trash bin of history? Because Russian morphology, at least for the first year student, is as oppressive as Stalin. Drill provides an opportunity, however artificial, to focus attention on form (or rather forms, dozens of them in nouns, adjectives and pronouns!) in such a way that at some point in the scond or third hundred hours of classroom contact students will have a realistic chance of some accuracy.
