I was born in Halberstadt, East Germany, on 15 March 1959, and spent formative years of my childhood in Moscow where I attended a Russian high school for four years.
When I was eleven, talent scouts of the Gorky Film Studio picked me for a lead in Hurray! We Have Holidays! (Ура! У нас каникулы!, 1971), a children’s film about friendship among kids from various countries. Working with director Vladimir Berenshtein and meeting many luminaries of Soviet cinema marked the beginning of my interest in Russian and Soviet film, a theme to which I later devoted years of teaching and research.
