Biographical Information















Dr. Poppen received his Ph.D. in Personality and Social Psychology from Cornell University in 1973.  Except for sabbatical leaves and brief stints elsewhere, he has been at GWU continuously since then. His is currently director of the Applied Social Psychology Program, and interim chair of the Psychology Department since May, 2005.  He served as chair of the Psychology Department from 1988-1991.  His research in the past decade has focused on gender and health, especially HIV/AIDS.  His special methodological interests concern survey research on sensitive topics, computerized data collection, and software development.  Away from the university, he is an avid tennis player.

Presentations  (1995-present)

          About 50 presentations in the last ten years, at regional, national, and international conferences.  Presentations have focused on several of my programs of  research on sexual behavior, especially sexual risk-taking behavior and perception.  Presentations have been with colleagues Reisen and Zea or  psychology graduate students from GWU or with undergraduate students.  Most of the presenations have been at annual meetings of the American Psychological Association (APA) and American Psychological Society (APS); additional presentations have been at meetings of Eastern Psychological Association (EPA), Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBM), Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality (SSSS).  Lastly, some of the presentations have been at the World Congress on AIDS (Barcelona, Bangkok), the International Congress of Psychology (Beijing), the International Congress of Cross Cultural Psychology (XI-AN), and the Conference on HIV/AIDS in Caribben and Latin America (Santiago)..

COURSES TAUGHT

          For over 20 years I have taught graduate and undergraduate courses at GWU in social psychology, sex roles and sex behavior, and research methodology especially survey research methods.

          My undergraduate courses, taught at various times,  include social psychology (Psych 12), theories of personality (Psych 129), psychology of sex differences (Psych 150),  psychology of attitudes and public opinion (Psych 156) , and the honors seminar (Psych 197). 

          My graduate courses include attitudes and atitude change (Psych 255), survey research methods (Psych 256), and special topics in social psychology <risk-taking behavior or some other health related topics> (Psych 257).
