One of the three "pillars" of a professor's contribution to the university is service. Service is a broad term applied in different ways at different institutions. In my opinion, there are two basic kinds of service that I strive to do: professional and community-based service. Professional service involves my participation in the academic community through committee work and leadership, as well as sitting on editorial boards of journals. Personal service includes my participation in volunteer activities that do not contribute directly to the university or to my field, but contribute to my community.
