Math 51: Finite Mathematics for the Social and Management Sciences

Textbook: Howard Rolf, Finite Mathematics, 7th Ed., Thompson Books/ Cole Publishers (2008)

Course Description :
Functions and Lines; Linear Systems; Linear Programming; Linear Programming: The Simplex Method; Mathematics of finance.
(Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5)

Prerequisites: Math 3 (College Algebra) or the Mathematics Placement Examination or a score of 560 or above on the SAT II in Mathematics.



Grading Policy:

  • There will 5 quizzes in the recitation sections (worth a total of 10%).
  • 2 In-Class Mid-term exams (worth 25% each): (Fall 2007 tentative dates: Thursdays, October 10 and November 14).
  • Cumulative Final Exam (worth 40%): Date to be determined.
  • Your semester grade will be based upon your own weighted average.  No Curves.
  • Basic cut off points for the letter grades are 90% (A-), 80% (B-), 65% (C-), and 50% (D-).

·         Week 1: Our classes begin September 5. 

·         Week 3: Quiz 1 on Thursday and Friday (Sept 20, 21)

·         Week 5: Quiz 2 on Thursday and Friday (Oct 4, 5)

·         Week 6: In-class Mid-term Examination #1 on Wednesday, October 10

·         Week 8: Quiz 3 on Thursday and Friday (Oct 25, 26)

·         Week 10: Quiz 4 on Thursday and Friday (Nov 8, 9)

·         Week 11: In-class Mid-term Examination #2 on Wednesday, November 14

·         Week 12: Thanksgiving break (Nov 22, 23). No recitations this week.

·         Week 13: Quiz 5 on Thursday and Friday (Nov 29, 30)

·         Week 15: Last day of classes for this course: December 10

·          Final Examination during December 13-21, 2007

 

 Last day to drop any course without a W: September 28 (CCAS rules-- end of 4th Week)

 Last day to withdraw from any course, without petitioning Dean: October 26 (CCAS rules-- end of 8th Week)

Homework Problems: Although the homework is not graded, it is extremely important to keep up with the coursework by doing the homework problems.

 

All examinations, and other graded work products are to be completed in conformance with The George Washington University Code of Academic Integrity.

 

Note: The students are expected to attend all lectures and recitations even though we do not take attendance. A missed test/quiz earns a zero-- there is No automatic makeup. Calculators are not allowed in the first part of this course.
