Joel Kuipers received his PhD from Yale University in 1982. Since 1989, he has taught at the George Washington University.
He is on leave 2010-11. In the fall of 2011, he will teach Language, Culture and Learning ANTH 163/3603 and Language Culture and Society in Southeast Asia ANTH 169/3691. He also teaches the graduate seminar in Linguistic Anthropology (ANTH 204), Ethnographic Analysis of Speaking (ANTH 162), Cultures of Southeast Asia (ANTH 193), and other various topics.
His research interests include authority and evidence in communicative practices, ritual speech, ethnography of reading and writing, scientific argumentation and reasoning, medical discourse, video ethnography and Southeast Asia.
