Final Presentation

For the final project each group is expected to focus on a contemporary American fear or anxiety. (Keep in mind that there are several levels to fear - address them all.) You will then create a "monster"* that embodies that fear and present this monster to the class for discussion.

*The nature of the monster you create depends largely on the definition of "monster" at which you as a group have arrived. Keeping in mind discussion that we have had throughout the semester and individual research interests, what are the qualities of a monster - how does one behave, what does one look like, how do they function. These are important questions and should be considered as you work.

You will be graded on:

1. The group's understanding of the underlying fear it has chosen to address.

2. How well the monster reflects the fear.

3. The inventiveness of the presentation.

4. Extent of class involvement.

5. Quality of the 1-2 page written component.*

*This is the one piece of writing that you will not be able to rewrite. Make sure it is impeccably presented.

AVOID

  • Passive voice
  • Repetition (make each word count)
  • Mechanical errors (formatting, punctuation)
  • Grammatical errors (agreement, usage)
  • Syntactical errors (make sure what you write is what you mean)

    INCLUDE

  • A clear point
  • A discussion of the evolution of the idea and your involvement in that evolution
  • Your understanding of the fear addressed and your group's intentions
  • Your assessment of the success of the presentation/changes you would have made in hindsight
