GROUP GUIDELINES

TIME
Each group will have at least as many days to present as there are people within the group (i.e. a group of five will have firve class periods allotted to it, a group of two will have two class periods). More time can be allotted to a group if necessary. I will need advance notice of this to make the necessary changes to the schedule.

PREPARATION
If you want the class to read/view/consider material before a class meeting you will need to give them (and me) at least a week's notice. Readings can be placed on Blackboard; viewing material can be placed on reserve in Media Resources in Gelman Library.

If you know you will need equipment (DVD player/LCD projector) that is not already in the room , I will also need at least a week's notice of this in order to request the equipment. All rooms (with one exception) seem to have at least Tv/VCR's. Plan ahead.

APPROACH
This is entirely up to the member of the group. Obviously all members should participate equally. How this participation manifests itself (behind the scenes as opposed to in class, whole group versus individual presentations) is the group's call.

GOALS
Group Goals
You are being asked to be selective rather than exhaustive in both your approach and in the materials you present. Given the time we have at our disposal, you cannot hope to cover every aspect of every topic. (I know. I've tried.)

You are also being asked to locate and present compelling material (compelling to you as a group and ideally compelling to the class as a whole) that will in turn spark class discussion on your chosen topic. You are not being asked to lecture.

Through the material you present some larger (group determined) questions should be posed about your subject.

Personal goals
You should be looking at the work you do for the group as preliminary to your own, deeper and more focused research into a particular topic. You are not presenting a draft version of your research paper. Rather, the work you do on the group project should shape, direct, and perhaps redirect your the direction you will eventually take in your own research project.
