Introduction

As a first year teacher at SmithHigh School, you agree to sponsor the Pep Club.(In your interview you answered with an enthusiastic “Yes!” when asked whether you would be willing to support extracurricular activities.)As you advertise your bimonthly meetings you are approached by a special education teacher who explains that the parent of one her students wants her child to participate in Pep Club. The parent read about the Pep Club on your school’s web page and had an older child who participated in the club two years ago.As you talk further with the special education teacher you learn that the student is identified as autistic.A number of thoughts and emotions immediately surface for you.You are sponsoring this club as a volunteer; no stipend is attached to this added responsibility. You did not anticipate the added challenge of a special needs child in the club. Can you deny the child access to the club? Can you demand support from a special education teacher at all of the meetings? How will you manage this child if he attends your Pep Club meetings?Where do you go from here?

As a general education teacher you are less apt to work with students identified with low incidence disabilities. It is important, however, to have knowledge and understanding of these disabilities. Whether a child is scheduled for your class, attends your school or participates in a club you sponsor knowledge of low incidence disabilities will improve your overall support of the children at your school.Equally important you should know where and how to get information and support regarding the educational and behavioral needs of students identified with low incidence disabilities.

Generally low incidence disabilities include autism, visual impairments, deafness or hard of hearing, physically disabilities and moderate or severe retardation.

The Task

To complete the assignment you will assume the roles of researchers and teachers. As researchers you will visit various websites to learn more about low incidence disabilities, with emphasis on autism. As teachers you will first create a brief descriptive case study of a student with autism or another low incidence disability, then construct an action plan that outlines ways in which you will accommodate the student’s learning and behavioral needs through your instructional and assessment practices.

To begin, research the web using the online resources listed below to formulate thoughtful and knowledgeable responses to these questions:

How are the following defined?(Include characteristics, causes, treatments and any other relevant information to support understanding of these low incidence disabilities)

Autistic

Visually Impaired

Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Moderately or Severely Retarded

Physically Disabled

1) How do 504 and IDEA legislation address the needs of students with low incidence disabilities, including autistic, deaf or hard of hearing, visually impaired, physically disabled or moderately to severely retarded?

2) What factors must be considered in determining to apply either or both forms of legislation in meeting a particular student’s learning needs?

3) Identify some school-based services provided for students with low incidence disabilities.

4) Identify challenges general education teachers may encounter when working with the following, as well as effective educational interventions:

Autistic

Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Visually Impaired

Physically Disabled

Moderately or Severely Retarded

5) What types of support can teachers working with children with low incidence disabilities expect at the school level?

6) What other resources can teachers access to assist them in working effectively with children with low incidence disabilities?

Step 3.Relying on the knowledge you’ve acquired about low incidence disabilities and your preparation to become teachers:

a. select one low incidence disability (blindness, hearing loss, autism, etc.)

b. create a case study of a fictional student. In two or three paragraphs, briefly describe your class environment and curriculum. Also, describe the learning disabled student including observed behaviors and ways the student appears to be academically and/or socially challenged.

Step 4.Outline an action plan that states specifically how you will modify your instruction and assessment practices to better meet the learning needs of this student.Identify how you will monitor the effectiveness of your action plan.

Step 5.Lead a mini-workshop in class to inform students about learning disabilities. You should plan to share your summary handout, case study and action plan.
