A WebQuest for Graduate Students in TRED 208 The Department of Teacher Preparation and Special Education The The
Back
to top In
the summer orientation for all new staff, your school principal announced
that the school is moving to an Inclusion model.Apparently, the new superintendent
is very supportive of Inclusion and expects all high schools not currently
using this approach to transition in the next two years. The principal
has selected your department to participate in phase one of this initiative,
claiming that the strong leadership and collegiality among social studies
faculty provide a firm foundation for instituting change. As described
by the principal, this means that your department team will be meeting
with special educators during the next few days to identify strategies
and discuss details. Overall,
your reaction to this news is positive. You’ve successfully worked with
learning disabled students in the past and are confident that you can
benefit from closer professional interactions with your colleagues in
special education. However, you aren’t really sure what inclusion entails. What
kinds of special needs kids will you be expected to work with and what
challenges can you expect? What kind of support will the special education
staff provide? Will support staff be present in the classroom and, if yes,
how will you work together? Because
you like to be prepared, you decide to do a bit of research on inclusion
prior to the upcoming meetings between the department team and special
educators. You stumble across the WebQuest below and wonder if it might
be useful for other members of your team.To find out, keep reading! To
complete this assignment you will assume the roles of researchers and
teachers. As researchers you will visit various websites to learn more
about inclusion. As teachers you will first create a handout that synthesizes
what you’ve learned and will share this with class members. You will also
develop a resource for general education teachers to use as a guide to
support their efforts with successful inclusion of special needs students. To
begin, research the web using the online resources provided below
to formulate thoughtful and knowledgeable responses to these questions: 1)What is Inclusion? 2)Why, how, and when
did Inclusion come into being? 3)Is Inclusion legislated?
Explain. 4)How does Inclusion
work? 5) Typically, students with what types of special needs participate
in Inclusive classrooms? 6)What are the strengths
and challenges associated with Inclusion? 7)What does the research
say about the effectiveness of Inclusion as an approach to meeting the
special needs of students? 8)What challenges
are posed by Inclusion for general education teachers? 9)What school-based
and other supports and resources are available to general education teachers
in working with special needs students included in their classes? Step
1.Using the questions listed above to guide your investigation
each group member will visit these online resources. IDEA
Practices: Laws and Regulations FAPE: The Families and Advocates
for Partnership in Education Federal Resource Center for Special Education Office
of Special Education Programs
Consortium on Inclusive Schooling Practices Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education National Center to Improve Practice in Special Education IDEA
Practices: Laws and Regulations
Step 2.Apply the knowledge you have gained as researchers
by creating a handout that summarizes the essential aspects of
what you’ve learned.Include resources that you think will be beneficial
to others. Step 3. Relying on the knowledge
you have acquired regarding inclusion and your preparation to become teachers
define the general educator’s role in successful inclusion of students
with special education needs. For class members, create a mini
resource booklet that includes information on instruction, assessment,
communication, leadership and record keeping as each relates to the successful
inclusion of special education students (what works, specific strategies
and techniques, things to consider, how to partner with special educators
in the classroom to instruct, assess, etc.). Step 4.Lead a mini-workshop in class to inform class members about inclusion. You should plan to share your summary handout and your mini resource booklet.
Congratulations
on completing this WebQuest! You should now understand the meaning of inclusion,
the benefits of inclusion for the total school community and the general
educator’s responsibilities as they relate to inclusion of special education
students. “Human well-being is not based merely on individual
characteristics, but is a result of the individual’s relation to other
people.”_Simo Vehmas
