Make-up policies

If you have a legitimate (i.e., multiple exams at the same time, medical problems, emergency absences, religious observances) scheduling conflict with any of the exams, it is your responsibility to notify your instructor of the conflict as soon as you become aware of it. The final decision regarding allowing a make-up exam is the course head's (subject to university regulations, of course). Please note that previously arranged travel plans are not a valid reason to be given a make-up exam.

Calculators

Calculators are a useful auxiliary tool for the course. However, it will be expected that you can work all of the problems without the aid of a calculator. Calculators will be permitted on exams, but it will be expected that all non-arithmetic work is present and explained in your answer.

Instructor's 25%

Homework problem sets will be assigned and collected on a weekly basis. These constitute 20% of the course total. Late problem sets will not be accepted for any reason.
Homework Grading Policies:
- Each problem set is worth 5 points;
- 3 of these 5 points are for "general impression";
- In each problem set, two or three problems will be graded in detail. The remaining 2 points are assigned according to a student's performance on these problems.
Several one-problem-quizzes will be given during the semester, which count for 5% of the course total.
Quiz Grading Policies:
- Each quiz is worth 2 points;
- 1 of these 2 points is for simply handing in the quiz;
- The other point is for the right solution of the problem.

Grading

75% of the final grade is based on your three exam scores, each weight equally. The other 25% of your grade will be determined by your homework and quiz scores. All scores will be scaled to a 0--100 scale before averaging. The final grading scale is:

A: 90% - 100%	C: 70% - 73%
A-: 87% - 90%	C-: 67% - 70%
B+: 83% - 87%	D+: 63% - 67%
B: 80% - 83%	D: 60% - 63%
B-: 77% - 80%	F: 0% - 60%
C+ 73% - 77%
