    Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), an arm of the Cabinet Office for the Government of Japan.
    Institute of Developing Economies (IDE) "aims at the expansion of trade relations and promotes economic cooperation with developing countries and regions, conducting high quality research work to meet the social needs." It is the policy research arm of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), a governmetnal organization to gather economic and trade information worldwide.
    Institute for International Policy Studies (IIPS) founded in June 1988 by former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone "for research and study, international exchange, and other activities conducive to examining critical issues facing the world and Japan."

    Ukiyoe
    A Guide to the Ukiyo-e Sites of the Internet is a vast list of links to internet sites related to Ukiyo-e prints.
    The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum based on the Sakai collection, was established as a comprehensive Ukiyo-e museum in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture in Spring 1982.
    Ukiyo-e Museum "introduces works from among the 8,000 or so ukiyo-e woodblock prints in the collections of Nagoya TV, Inc. with the hope that the viewer will come to appreciate these works just as the people of the Edo period enjoyed them."

    Museum Information Japan offers links to a number of national and regional museums.
    The Tokyo National Museum "continues to pursue the traditional role of a conscientious guardian of the invaluable cultural properties of Japan, so that they will be preserved and transmitted to the coming generations."
    The Kyoto National Museum was established as an national institution for the collection and preservation of cultural properties. In addition to exhibiting these collections to the public, the Museum supports related research and conservation activities.
    The Nara National Museum "has long been deeply involved in the preservation, inventory, and research of Japanese antiquities and archeological artifacts, especially artworks related to Buddhism.     The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo "engages in a wide range of activities, including the collection and preservation of works of art, craft, and film."
    The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto "The Museum is a nationa1 institution devoted to the collection and preservation of art works and related reference materials of the 20th century in Japan and other parts of the world. In particular, emphasis is put on the artists or artistic movements in Kyoto and the Kansai(the western districts of Japan), for instance, Japanese-style paintings of the Kyoto School, although overviewing the mainstreams of Japanese modern art, and craft movements and works in the world covering every genre of the crafts."
    The National Museum of Art, Osaka aims to demonstrate how Japanese art developed in close relation to the art of the world, without restrictions to period or region. Major exhibitions focus on international influence and exchange in contemporary art.
    The National Museum of Ethnology aims to promote a general understanding and awareness of people, societies and cultures throughout the world through ethnological (anthropological) research, the collection and conservation of ethnographic materials, and public exhibitions.
    National Science Museum The exihibits, grouped in three buildings, explain the evolution of living things, the flora and fauna of Japan, the solar system, the classification of animals, the origins of the Japanese Archipelago and the development of the Japanese people.
    Edo-Tokyo Museum "reviews Edo-Tokyo's 400 years of traditions. Within its vast permanent exhibition area, the museum has many large-scale models, including replicas of the Nihonbashi bridge and the kabuki theater, in addition to visual display units. Originals of many historical valuables are also on permanent exhibition."
    National Museum of Japanese History is "the only museum of Japanese history in Japan which supports systematic research and exhibitions of Japanese history and culture."
    Currency Museum was "established in 1982 in commemoration of the Bank's Centenary and opened in November 1985. The Museum belongs to the Institute for Monetary and Economic Studies, the Bank of Japan."

    JAPANESE LITERARY TEXTS ONLINE
    The Japanese Text Initiative at The University of Virginia Library Electronic Text Center provides the following titles: Yosano Akiko's Midaregami, Mori Ogai's Gan, Soseki's Kokoro, Koda Rohan's Goju no to and Tai dokuro, Takuboku's Ichiaku no suna and Kanashiki gangu, Hagiwara Sakutaro's Tsuki ni hoeru, Akutagawa Ryunosuke's Jigokuhen and Kappa, Yokomitsu Riichi's Kikai, Dazai's Shayo.
    JapaneseLiteratureNet* is "a network that, through the voluntary contributions of five famou s authors: Yasutaka Tsutsui, Kyoji Kobayashi, Akira Hori, Yuji Usui, and Aki Sato, seeks to express Japanese literature to the world." There's an English link but has very little on it.
    J-Text* refers to itself as the Japanese literature electronic library. They provide their own texts--such as Heike monogatari and Taiheiki--as well as links to other sites. The files may be in different formats, i.e. PDF files.
    Aozora Bunko* (Blue Sky Collection) provides online texts of modern and contemporary authors.
    Online Digital Books* put to gether by the "Committee on Digitizing Books" that dreams of making all books available through the internet.
    Taiju's Notebook* provides a few texts--both modern and classical. Some are still works in progress.
    Shiritsu PDD Toshokan* by Doku Tobin provides a few texts in Modern Japanese.
    Tsuyukusa iro no sato* provides a few texts, as well as his own interpretations of mostly classical poems and poetic tales.
    Kanazawa University Library* provides a number of links to online texts. If you know the name of the piece, click on the following links. The works are in kana order:   a-ko  |   sa-no  |   ha-wa
    Kotobaseek* by T. Nozaki provides links to many sites concerning Japanese language and literature.
    Mini-collection of Modern Japanese Literature is a collection created of electronic texts for the program of modern Japanese literature at the University of Calgary. It is designed by X. Jie YANG for students who have taken only two years of Japanese language classes at the University of Calgary.

    General Lists There are a number of sites that provide access to electronic text files of the Japanese classics.
    The Japanese Text Initiative is a collaborative project between The University of Virginia Library Electronic Text Center and the University of Pittsburgh East Asian Library. Their efforts make texts of classical Japanese literature available on the World Wide Web. They provide the following titles: Manyoshu, Kokin wakashu, Ise monogatari, Kagero nikki. Genji monogatari, Izumi Shikibu nikki, Sarashina nikki, Makura no soshi, Saigyo's poetry, Gosenshu, Shuishu, Goshuishu, Kin'yoshu, Shikashu, Senzaishu, Shinkokinshu, Hojoki, Ogura hyakunin isshu, Tsurezuregusa, Heike monogatari, selected Noh plays, Saikaku's Koshoku gonin onna and Koshoku ichidai onna, Basho's Oku no hosomichi, Chikamatsu's Sonezaki shinju and Shinju ten no Amijima, Buson Haikushu, Selections from Kabuki plays, Kanadehon Chushingura, Akinari, Ugetsu monogatari, Ryokan kashu, Issa's Ora ga Haru, Futabatei's Ukigumo, Kyoka's Koyahijiri.
    Nihon Bungaku Text Files* at Fukui University provides links to many other sites.
    Kokubungaku Kenkyu Shiryokan in Tokyo, Japan, is the center for many scholars who conduct research with original manuscripts. It houses virtually everything published in Japanese on Japanese literature.
    Kotenmura* 古典村 is a new sight that that offers texts for the lover of the Japanese classics. While the number of texts is still relatively few, it looks to be promising.
    Classical Waka Links* connects those interested in classical court poetry to a number of other sites.
    Data Links to Japanese Classical Literary Texts* is provided by Kosugi Akio who encourages information exchange through the internet.
    Image Databases/Catalogs from the Rare Collections at the Kyoto University Electronic Library Archives. They also provide texts of sories by Higuchi Ichiyo, but they are currently experiencing technical difficulties.

    Man'yōshū 万葉集 There are a number sites that offer links to pages dedicated to the first major Japanese anthology of poetry. Most provide a limited number of poems depending on the taste of its creator. The Man'yōshū Related Corner lists links to Man'yoshū related sites. One link, Tanoshii Man'yōshū provides the poems, some of which are linked to a modern translation, photos and a brief bio of the composer. There is a site by Hisashi Mizugaki dedicated to Otomo Yakamochi, one of the major poets in Man'yōshū, that offers perhaps the most links to Manyō related sites. Bungaku Text Database offers an index of terms found in the Man'yōshū. The entire text is available at the Japanese Text Initiative.
    Hyakuni isshu 百人一首 For the original text with English translation and a few woodblock print images, go to the Japanese Text Initiative. The text with a modern Japanese translation and other bits of imformation is available at Fūfuhikōgashō (the Six Styles of Poetry as described in the Kokinshū). The text also is available at Koten mura, Hiroshima University (by Hirotsugu Kakugawa).
    Sangashū 三家集 The collection of Saigyo's poems is available at Koten mura.
    Izumi shikibu shū 和泉式部集 The collection of Izumi shikibu's poems is available at Koten mura.

    POETICS
    Roppyakuban utaawase 六百番歌合 The Poetry Match in 600 Rounds is available in part (approximately the first half) at Tsuyukusa iro no sato.
    Kindai shūka 近代秀歌, the poetic treatise by Fujiwara Teika is provided by Eiichi Shibuya of Takachiho University. It contains the text as well as the image of the original in Teika's handwriting.
    Yoru no tsuru 夜の鶴, a poetic treatise by the Nun Abutsu, is found on Taiju's Notebook.

    Kagerō nikki かげろ日記 The diary of Michitsuna's mother is available at the Japanese Text Initiative.
    Murasaki shikibu nikki 紫式部日記 The diary of Izumi shikibu is available at the Japanese Text Initiative.
    Izumi shikibu nikki 和泉式部日記 The diary of Izumi shikibu is available at Koten mura and the Japanese Text Initiative.

    Taketori monogatari 竹取物語 The entire text of the mother of all monogatari is available at the
    Japanese Text Initiative and in Taiju's Notebook. The text can also be downloaded as an Extended UNIX Code (EUC) text file from Matsusaka University.
    Ise monogatari 伊勢物語 The entire text of perhaps the most famous of the uta monogatari (poem tales) is available through the Japanese Text Initiative. The text is also available at Koten mura and Tsuyukusa iro no sato. Just for fun, check out IseMonogatari.com. They offer some of the chapters in modern Japanese translation.
    Yamato monogatari 大和物語 The entire text is found at Tsuyukusa iro no sato. It is a work in progress in Taiju's Notebook, but most of it seems to be done.
    Genji monogatari 源氏物語 The entire text is now currently available through the Japanese Text Initiative. Another source is The World of Genji Monogatari. Eiichi Shibuya of Takachiho University, stating to make available the Genji to "anyone, anytime, anywhere" through the internet, offers the text in the original classicl version, modern translation, and interestingly in romanization (personally, I think it is harder to read). The Japan Classic Literature Research Institute (Koten sougou kenkyuujo) maintains a website called Genji Net. It is a site the offers information concerning recently published material related to Genji monogatari. The Institute focuses on research on the Genji, developing databases for texts and indices. In general, the database is available to subscribers, but there are some sample files online. The entire text of Yosano Akiko's modern rendition of Genji monogatari is available online from Kadokawa Publishing.
    Heike monogatari 平家物語 The entire text is available at the Japanese Text Initiative.
    Ochikubo monogatari The entire text is available by Hagiwara Fumio of Komazawa Junior College.
    Tsutsumi chūnagon monogatari 堤中納言物語 The entire text is available at Taiju's Notebook.
    Uji shūi monogatari 宇治拾遺物語 The entire text is made available by Hagiwara Fumio of Komazawa Junior College. It will take a while to load, for it's all on one page!
    Ugetsu monogatari 雨月物語 Ueda Akinari's tale of the strange is available at the Japanese Text Initiative.
