Notes on using these references:

* Often online databases will use one of many alternate spellings for greek or latin words. use the "or" function to help solve this issue "vergil or virgil".

* Many journals contract with online digital archives (like JSTOR or ProQuest) to post issues published prior to the last few years (for example, JSTOR only holds issues of the American Journal of Archaeology that were published from its inception in 1897 to six years prior to the current calendar year, so currently JSTOR has the AJA from 1897-2003). In many cases, the most recent issues are only available in hard copy on the 3rd floor of Gelman.

*Reference works, on the other hand, are updated online much more frequently, and should therefore be consulted before hard copies. For example, the hard copy of the Oxford Classical Dictionary owned by Gelman is from 1996, while the most recent update of the online edition dates to 2009.

*Be wary of clunky and outdated translations. Translations of primary sources should be used as a guideline, not as a replacement for personal translations.

Primary Sources:

Loeb Classical Library:
A collection of primary texts (Greek and Latin) with side-by-side translations and extensive footnotes. Perfect for students with limited Classical language background. Available in Gelman, collected in PA 3612.

Perseus Project:
Fully digitized Greek and Latin texts, which allow users to translate texts word by word. Other available features: Latin/Greek word search, side by side translations, word count, and cross-references to other works. Great for primary source in-depth analysis and philological research. Fastest means of access is to search through google: write "perseus" and the title of the work you are searching for to avoid the awkward and clunky Perseus interface.

Latin Library:
A collection of Latin texts in a database. Easily accessible, but no translations. However, users should be careful to compare their assigned text with those accessible through the Latin Library- there may be major or minor differences.

TOCS-IN:
Tables of contents of journals related to Classical Studies. This database includes the contents of non-digital journals. Perfect for finding articles in hard-copy-only journals without searching through paper tables of contents.

Diotima:
Bibliographies of ancient texts and articles related to women and gender in ancient times sorted by title. Links to full text or online copies where applicable. Allows user to identify helpful articles which may be obscure.

Abzu:
A  search engine for the Ancient Near East. Searches many international databases, supplying the citation and a link to the abstract or full text.
