William John Briscoe earned his Ph.D. in Experimental Nuclear Physics from The Catholic University of America in 1978 (MS Northeastern 1972, BA Catholic 1970). He was an Assistant Research Professor for four years at the University of California, Los Angeles. He came to GW in 1982 as Assistant Professor, was promoted to Associate Professor in 1986 and Professor in 1998.

Currently, he is Director of the GW/JLab Data Analysis Center and Director of the GW Center for Nuclear Studies. He has worked as a guest or visiting scientist at several national and international laboratories including the Armed Forces Radiobiological Research Institute (AFRRI, Bethesda, MD), Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF, Los Alamos, NM), National Bureau of Standards Radiation Laboratory (NBS, Gaithersburg) TRI-Universities Meson Facility (TRIUMF, Vancouver, BC), Laboratoire National Saturne, Saclay (LNS, Gif-sur-Yvette, France), Nationaal Instituut voor Kernfysica en Hoge Energiefysica (NIKHEF, Amsterdam, Netherlands), MIT-Bates (Middleton, MA), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL, Upton, NY), Jefferson Lab (JLab, Newport News, VA), Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute (PNPI, Gatchina, Russia), Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Nuclear Physics (ITEP), Moscow, Russia), MAX-Lab (Lund, Sweden), and most recently at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI, Mainz, Germany).

As principal investigator on the GW contract with SURA and director of the GW Nuclear Detector Laboratory, he supervised the design and construction of the focal-plane detector for the Hall B Tagged Photon Facility and served as one of the working group leaders for the Tagger Working Group. He has also served on the Executive Committees of the CLAS, Crystal Ball (at both BNL and MAMI), and MAX-Lab Collaborations. He has 100 refereed journal articles and over 80 presentations and conference proceedings to his credit with over a dozen invited presentations given at international conferences in the last 5 years.

William J Briscoe is an expert in nuclear detection and detection devices. He has designed and constructed several large dedicated systems for experiments at major laboratories including LANL, BNL, JLab, and MAMI. He usually serves as safety officer within his collaborations and within the Physics Department at GWU. He has conducted ALARA workshops at GW for nuclear physics students preparing to go to do work in the field. He has received various levels of radiation training at DOE laboratories over the years including SCBA training (at LANL) for work with tritium and other air borne radioactive materials. He has been a consultant on the effects of Electromagnetic Radiation on electronic devices and stored data.
