Andrew Zimmerman

I am an Associate Professor of History at George Washington University. I do research on Germany, overseas imperialism, and the social sciences. My book, Anthropology and Antihumanism in Imperial Germany , connected the discipline of anthropology to overseas imperialism, mass culture, and the ethnocentrism of European humanism. I am now writing a book about how Germans used the Jim Crow US South as a model for their colonial rule in Africa. The book focuses on an expedition sent by Booker T. Washington’s Tuskegee Institute to set up a cotton school in the West African colony of Togo. I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in modern European history and the history of imperialism and globalization.
