Q: How to get around Washington, DC?
A: The best way of travelling in Washington is by using its
vast MetroRail subway system. It's fast, convenient, and (relatively)
inexpensive. The complete information about routes, schedules, fares etc. is
available from the web site of the Washington
Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. You can familiarize yourself with the
Washington MetroRail system by having a look their System Map in
black/white or
color.
Q: Where can one find a good campus map of the GWU?
A:
Here.
Q: What are the nearest Metro stations to the GWU campus?
A: The GWU campus is located between Foggy Bottom and
Farragut West stations on the Orange/Blue lines and Farragut North station on
the Red line. Both Farragut stations are just outside of the
campus map,
in the right upper corner.
Q: How expensive is Metro? How does one pay for it?
A: A one-way ticket can cost anything between $1.35 and $4.50
depending on the length of the travel and time of the day. The maximal ticket
price is $4.50 during the rush hours (6:00am–9:30am and
3:00pm–7:00pm) and $2.35 otherwise. The price of going to each
destination is listed on the attendant booth at every station.
To pay for your trip you must purchase a farecard from one of the farecard
machines at the station entrance. You then put your farecard into the
faregates at the beginning and end of your trip, so that the appropriate fare
can be charged. If you don't have enough money on your farecard left at the
exit, you can replenish it at the exitfare machines.
Detailed instructions on how to
buy a farecard
and use MetroRail
faregates can be found on the WMATA
web site.
