Dr. Young-Key
Kim-Renaud, Professor of Korean Language and Culture and International Affairs
and Chair of the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at George
Washington University, received the Republic of Korea Order of Cultural
Merit, Jade Class (Taehanmin'guk Okkwan Munhwa Hunjang) on October 9, 2006
for her life-time contribution to the advancement of Korean language and
culture. The order was conferred upon the recipient by the ROK President Roh
Moo-hyun at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul during the first
national observance of the Korean Alphabet Day since it was voted by the ROK
National Assembly in December 2005 to be one of the top flag days in Korea.
Kim-Renaud was invited at the National Assembly on October 10, 2006, to address
key policy makers, researchers, and colleagues. The Korean alphabet was
invented and promulgated by King Sejong the Great in 1446. It is one of the
greatest scientific and cultural achievements in Korean history.
