gThe nine articles on Korean syntax and semantics collected in this volume showcase Kunofs contribution to Korean linguistics. These articles are testimony to Susumu Kunofs boundless inventiveness, powers of observation, and sensitivity to language data.h – from the Introduction.

gTaking up many thought-provoking issues that have not been previously touched on or have been incompletely studied, the authors endeavor to present insightful solutions. Moreover, the book is an important contribution to the comparative syntax of Korean and Japanese. Some papers are explicitly so titled; in others, which only make reference to parallel cases in Japanese, it is apparent that many insights have derived from Kunofs in-depth knowledge of, and research into, Japanese syntax and semantics. Furthermore, all analyses and arguments in the chapters are essentially oriented in line with Kunofs functional linguistics, reflecting the authorsf keen observations and analyses of detailed functional aspects of linguistic data. The authorsf syntactic formalisms also reflect such functionally based claims and generalizations.h--Ho-min Sohn, Korean Linguistics, Vol. 13, 2006
