Korean Consonantal Phonology Young-Key Kim-Renaud 1995 (third edition and fourth printing: first
edition by Tower Press, 1974), 339 pages. ISBN 89-348-0373-8, Seoul: Hanshin Publishing Company E-mail: hanshinp@chollian.net |
This book is an attempt to present, exemplify and
justify a particular analysis of a portion of Korean phonology involving
consonantal alternations including those in the so-called girregularh verbs,
the neutralization of obstruents, h becoming a coronal stop, and consonant
cluster simplifications and fortition phenomena, as well as assimilation
phenomena such as palatalization, nasalization, lateralization and various
place assimilation. Assumptions about a set of boundaries used in this
work and a summary of rule ordering relations are presented as appendixes. The
structure of this volume reflects three most crucial characteristics in Korean
phonology: (1) the universal tendency for consonants to assimilate to
neighboring segments; (2) the tendency for an intervocalic consonant to weaken,
and (3) the tendency for a syllable coda to be unreleased.
This gground breakingh book is one of the most
frequently quoted literatures in Korean linguistics.
