In 1377, Elizabeth Chaucer entered the Priory of St. Helen to become a nun.
Above is an image of the second nun from Chaucer's
Canterbury Tales
(from the Ellesmere manuscript, housed in the Huntington Library of San Marino,
California).
In 1381, Elizabeth became a nun at Barking Abbey in
London. This is a twentieth century artist's reconstruction
of what Barking Abbey looked like in the late medieval period.
