A Sample of Student Evaluations from Eric H. Cline's GWU courses:

Homer and the Trojan War (Fall 2000; Spring 2004; Fall 2005):

This is simply the best course I have taken at GW.  Dr. Cline is a great asset to this university.

Course reading is intensive.  Professor is extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and open-minded.

“I was expecting a course that would help me become an expert on the Trojan War, and it happened.  Course was very well taught with lots of info.  [Instructor] extremely knowledgeable about the subject and a very nice guy.”

“Detailed history of the Trojan War, archaeologically and textually.  We explored many aspects of Troy.  Good discussion leader, open to questions, knowledgeable about all aspects of the topic.”

“Had great expectations and they were all met.  The course was great.  Strengths were content and the fact that it was small enough for discussion and papers rather than exams.

“I expected an in-depth examination of the historicity of the Trojan War.  My expectations were brilliantly met.  He was very knowledgeable and helpful.  A wonderful professor.”

“At first I thought it would be a literary analysis of the Trojan War.  I was surprised, but it met expectations.  Strengths were the lectures.  He is brilliant, but way too cocky.”

“Thorough investigation into different aspects of Trojan War.  Strengths: extremely knowledgeable and open minded.”

“I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but it was a highly interesting course.  Lots of interaction, student-guided; readings presented numerous points of view; [but] sometimes so much reading was done and presented that there wasn’t too much time to discuss.”

“Dr. Cline’s a lot of fun and his classes are always interesting.  It was a very open class so he did not have to be overly structured.”

“He was great; approachable and effective.”

“Dr. Cline was respectful of ideas.”

“Small class size; great, knowledgeable professor; interesting peers.”

“Extremely knowledgeable on subject, friendly, accessible.”

“Very, very knowledgeable and cares about the subject, which makes us interested.”

“Dr. Cline is great, really funny.”

“Dr. Cline has a good feel for teaching knows how to communicate very well.”

“Presented all sides; spoke openly about his feelings on the subject, but allowed disagreement.”

“The instructor is very well versed in the topic and encouraged critical thinking.”

“Excellent [in] leading discussions; didn’t overpower developing theories.”

“This was a great class. Doctor Cline was a great professor with a lot to say, and who shed a lot of light on many things. I would tell anyone to take this class. It's great, and probably my favorite class I have taken in college thus far.”

“Dr. Cline is so passionate and knowledgeable that his excitement for the course was transferred to the students.”

“I truly enjoyed the class in the sense that it was a forum of education that promoted individual participation as opposed to just sitting and listening to a book talk. Also, rather than using a book he assigned a variety of primary sources teaching that you
can't believe everything that you read. GREAT CLASS!!”

“Dr. Cline was extremely informed and enthusiastic.  We read relevant and interesting texts.”

“Thanks for a great semester!”

“Course was organized very effectively.”

“The readings were very important to the topic that we discussed in class that day. They were also relatively interesting.”

“I expected this class to be a little more about literature, but I still really enjoyed it.  The only problem was that there is no “right” answer to the question of Troy; it hasn’t been proven yet.  Professor Cline was really interesting.”

“It is perfect for people who love classical studies.”

“I wanted to learn more about the Trojan War; I learned more than I ever wanted to know.”

“[Cline] was AMAZING!!”

“I expected a fairly different course, thinking it to be more lectures.  But the discussion-type class was much better.”
