A Sample of Student Evaluations from Eric H. Cline's GWU courses:

History of Ancient Egypt and the Near East (Fall 2000; Fall 2002; Spring 2005):

“Professor Cline is helpful, knowledgeable, approachable, etc — he is the best professor I’ve had at GW.”

“Excellent instructor.  Visuals very effective, stories interesting.  Knew his material very well and made what could be a boring class very interesting and worth coming to.  I regretted missing one of his classes.”

“He is awesome.  I would definitely recommend classes with him.  Lectures were great and fun.”

“I was expecting a highly enjoyable and challenging course, and I got one.  Best professor at GW.”

“Cline is informative, organized, approachable, friendly, and entertaining.  Perfect mix of learning and staying awake.  Most professors who know a lot about something are dull — not Cline.”

“This course was really amazing except that there is just so much information to cover in one semester.”

“Prof. Cline is a really great teacher who is respectful of students’ ideas and sparks interest in the material.”

“The lectures were incredibly interesting and fun, which is somewhat surprising given that this material could have been presented in a boring manner.”

“Presentation and humor made it interesting because he was enthusiastic.”

“Excellent lecturer, knowledgeable, approachable, funny.”

“The class is challenging and the tests are difficult and really force you to study the material (that’s either a strength or a weakness).”

“Knowledgeable in his field; funny; great lecturer.”

“Best professor ever.”

“Strengths were professor’s genuine interest and knowledge of the material.  No weaknesses, honestly.  Professor Cline is knowledgeable, engaging, and always there for his students.  I have no criticisms; this class was arranged wonderfully.”

“Cline’s one of the best professors at GW.”

“Professor has great interpersonal skills and great anecdotes.”

“He is a very knowledgeable professor and relates the info in an interesting way.”

“Enthusiastic professor who was very knowledgeable about the material.”

“Excellent professor who always offered both sides of an argument.”

“Dr. Cline is great — approachable, enthusiastic, and a great lecturer.”

“The lectures were always interesting and fun to go to.  Class just flew by.”

“Excellent professor!  Stay as you are!”

“I think Cline is a really interesting, polite, and intelligent instructor.  I wish I had taken more of his classes.  His class has led me to possibly get a Masters or even a Ph.D. in this field of study.”

“Interesting; good use of technology and obviously very interested and knowledgeable in subject matter.”

“I was expecting a ‘run-of-the-mill’ history course; did not expect the archaeological element; it was great!”

“Entire course taught using slides displaying archaeological evidence, which was a major strength — this showed the process of discovery, rather than just saying the info.”

Very good lecturer; included dissenting opinions/interpretations of archaeological evidence.”

“Best instructor at this university!”

“Cline is a great lecturer who can make anything seem interesting and make interesting things even more so.”

“Dr. Cline is an excellent lecturer and keeps the class interested, engaged, and awake.  Also, he is very available and accessible to the students and values their input in a way [that] few others do.”

“He should clone himself so he could teach more classes.”

“Great class.  Discussion was encouraged, which is a good thing.”

“Dr. Cline is a great professor – always engaging, excited about his subject, and willing to address any current archaeological finds or student questions.”

“Dr. Cline was an amazing professor as usual.  Great sense of humor, very intelligent, and he knows his stuff.”

“Instructor is very excited about the subject and that passes over to the students.”

“Lectures were very engaging and interesting, especially the multi-media extravaganzas.”

“Great lecturer; able to captivate the students.  Takes personal interest in them as individuals.  [I] always enjoy his stories!”

“Great personality; delivers info-packed lecture but in fun way; always prepared with slides, overheads, etc; VERY approachable outside class.’

“He’s a great guy.  Makes class worth getting up for.”

“Dr. Cline has been a real asset to GW’s history department in the last few years.  He is a great professor.”

Professor Cline made power point presentations very interesting — he never read from the screen or read from notes but spoke from his vast reservoir of knowledge — this made his talks much more interesting.

The strengths of the course were definitely the Prof., Dr. Cline, who is GW's very best professor.

Prof. Cline was very available outside of class, and went out of his way to make sure that students, especially uncertain freshmen, had an easy adjustment and an available resource.

The exams were very challenging and really forces the student to study. If the student does not study, they will not do well on the exam. Even if the student attended all the lecture classes, studying is still required…which makes the class harder than the average GW class.

Although most of the information was factual, there was some room for critical thinking — there were many issues in which a definite answer was lacking and thus left room for interpretation.

Made lectures more enjoyable with amiable personality and light-hearted humor. Very intelligent professor who shared both viewpoints of ambiguous issues.

Professor is awesome. I would take any class he taught.

Excellent professor...by far the best I've had at GW.

The professor is amazing. He is arrogant, but since his teaching skills are awesome, one can overlook his excessive confidence in the subject matter.

Dr. Cline is the very best professor at GW. His lectures are clear and excellent. His unbounded enthusiasm for his subject is immediately obvious in every lecture. He's always helpful with any student's questions, regardless of subjects.

Great professor.

The course should be split into two. One for the Near East and the other for Egypt. Other than that the class was amazing and I would recommend it to anyone.

Great class. Really nice professor!!!

Cline is awesome.

Cline, as ever, is a delightfully engaging professor. He makes the material interesting.

Didn't really affect my thinking, but it did greatly affect my understanding of the history of the region, and the ancient world. Mixed well with other classes I have had with Prof. Cline in order to give me a relatively full picture of the region during that time period.

Immensely knowledgeable, and very enthusiastic. He is an excellent professor, and clearly enjoys what he is doing. I'm not sure what else to say, he is a great teacher.

Cline is still the man.

“The professor was very effective in helping to organize 3000 years of history in a great fashion; he had a great sense of humor.  Dr. Cline is by far the best professor I've had in my humanities courses here at GWU!!”

“Very thorough explanations of a period of history that was new to me.  Prof. Cline always encouraged discussions on open-ended historical debates.”

“Well, to be honest with you, History has always been O.K., nothing more, but his class has been great, the material, the way he teaches [is] excellent; the best professor I've had at GW.”

“A Prof. who seems to really know the subject matter and is interested in it.  He made it quite interesting and the insights from his experiences were great.”

“The instructor is very, very knowledgeable in his field; it was very helpful and inspiring.  I liked the occasional group discussions as well.”

“He knows everything about the topic, and I love his class, and he mentions Indiana Jones!”

“The grading is entirely based on two exams and one paper, and it's not the easiest thing to do well.”

“It was a true pleasure to have Professor Cline teaching this course, because he was truly knowledgeable on the subject.”

“This is a very educational yet entertaining class. Well presented.”

“This class was awesome. I'd recommend to anybody.”

“Good teacher. Very knowledgeable.”

“Fantastic course.”

“Dr. Cline is the best professor that I've ever had so far in GW - he is very nice and presents the material the best.”

“I really enjoyed Professor Cline's extensive knowledge of this period, and his comedy approaches an anecdote.”

“Great class.”

“This is a really nice class, enjoyable and professor is nice too.”

“I really loved this course! I would suggest to anyone and everyone that they take a class with Cline!”
