Although written in the forties as part of Black Boy, this tale of Wright's life in Chicago details much of Wright's official dealings with the Communist Party (USA), and as such did not really coincide with Harper's publishing desires. Its publication as a separate book in 1977, again by Harper and Row, has been subsequently superseded by HarperCollins's publication of the two sections together under the title Black Boy.
